Gutters: How to Choose, Install and Clean Them

Rain gutters are such a widespread part of our lives that you may have never considered what they do or if they are really necessary. The quick answer is yes, for reasons that we’ll discuss later. The most essential thing to remember is that a gutter system conducts water away from your home, assisting in the prevention of mildew, mold, disastrous rainwater pooling, and other water damage around your home’s foundation over time.

Which gutters are considered the best?

Now when it comes to choosing the best-in-class gutter installation, it is necessary to know that there are different types of gutters available in the market. Ideally, they should be chosen on the basis of the exact application, available budget, surrounding décor, and local weather. However, some of the modern gutter styles popular these days are:

Sectional Gutters

Sectional gutters usually come in 10-foot lengths and can be fixed to your home’s fascia board with the help of hangers. They connect by overlying or snapping together with joiner elements. These types of gutters can be installed using a DIY approach. Sectional gutters and their components like a copper downspout, gutter wedges, gutter guards, and corners can easily be found at a local home improvement store.

Copper rain gutters, vinyl gutters, and metal gutters come under the purview of sectional gutters. The main benefits of these gutters are their easy availability, low cost, simple gutter installation, and the option to switch out individual sections.

Seamless Gutters

If you want to stay high on the décor part, seamless gutters emerge as the best option as they are lesser prone to leakage, come in diverse color choices, and most importantly give a refined look. This type of gutter installation is quite quick and requires lesser mess.

Since there is no length limit on seamless gutters, they can run as far as from one corner to another. Mostly, they come in aluminum metal.

Round Gutters

In this category, three types of gutters are installed – K-Shape, Half-Round Shape, and Fascia gutters.

Gutter Installation: Everything you need to know

Gutters are available in 10-, 20-, and 33-foot lengths. Downspouts are available in 3and 4-inch widths and 10-foot lengths. If you have trees overhead, use 4-inch downspouts and outlet fittings, followed by gutter screens. This low-cost combo can save you from overflows, corrosion, and hazardous ladder work.

Here is a step-wise gutter installation process:

Attach a slip-joint splice to either end of an inside corner fitting. Insert the splices as far as they will go. Then, using tin snips, cut the first portion of the gutter to length. Mark the gutter length using a square and a pencil, then cut to the line. If the tin snips deform the gutter profile, just bend it back into shape using needle-nose pliers. Gutter material can also be cut with a chop saw or saber saw, but make sure to clean the steel filings off the painted surface first.

Now, install a downspout outlet in the gutter. Cut a starter hole in the gutter with a chisel, drill, or saber saw and nibble out the finished opening with tin snips. Highlight the screw hole locations and bore 1/8 in holes through the gutter. Then, put the filling into the hole and secure it using small screws. Instead of installing the outlet fixtures, you can choose 12-in. lengths of gutter with factory-installed outlet fittings.

Install a hanger bracket every 2 to 3 feet after attaching all of the essential components to this length of gutter. Tie the bracket’s hooked end under the front flange and push the remaining end over the rear of the gutter. Lift the gutter into place with assistance and fasten the corner first, screwing the bracket into the fascia of the roof. The remaining hangers should be secured with 2-inch galvanized nails or screws.

There are two options for doing end-to-end gutter splicing. You can use a splice fitting, such as the ones found on the inner corner, or you can overlap in the direction of the water flow. Both strategies are effective, but we like to combine them. A slip coupling, no matter how well attached, tends to work like a hinge, Overlapping keeps things straight and draws less attention.

Install two U-shaped downspout brackets, one high and one low, on the house’s corner. Install the last elbow after bringing the downspout to within 1 foot of the ground. Finally, cut a notch on one end of a 36-inch downspout to create a fold-up extension. Simply cut a few inches off the top half and screw the extension to the elbow on both sides. This system directs water away from the home while allowing you to tilt up the extensions when mowing the grass.
